How Long Does It Take to Train as a Celebrant?

Oct 31
If you’re interested in becoming a celebrant, one of the most common questions is: How long does it take?”

The answer depends on the type of training, the flexibility of the course, and the depth of content covered.

Some people prefer a faster, focused approach, while others choose a longer route, perhaps even working toward a formal academic qualification. This guide will help you explore your options and decide what’s best for you.

Types of Celebrant Training and Their Duration

Celebrant training options vary widely, from flexible, self-paced courses to longer, formal qualifications. Here’s a look at the main types available:

1) Self-Paced Online Training

For many, flexible online courses, like those offered by Celebrant Training School, are the perfect choice.

With bitesize, pre-recorded instructional videos, you can learn at your own pace and even revisit lessons as often as you need. These courses also include practical written tasks and live one-to-one sessions, allowing you to progress as quickly or as gradually as need. Many trainees complete the entire program in a week by dedicating focused time, while others spread it over weeks or months, balancing other work and family commitments. This approach is ideal if you want flexibility without compromising depth, gaining hands-on skills and personalised feedback along the way. With your skills and competency fully assessed and developed you can gain accreditation and certification.

2) Live Online Courses

Live online courses offer scheduled sessions, much like face-to-face training, but are held via platforms like Zoom or Teams. They provide real-time interaction and support but come with a fixed schedule, requiring participants to be present at specific times. This format can be convenient for those who prefer a fixed timetable and group interaction but may not work well for those with varying schedules or other responsibilities. Many live online courses are either 3-5 days. Because no travel is involved, these days might be consecutive or can be spaced apart. Live online courses rarely involve any individual assessment or development of your skills. With no competency assessment as part of the course many question their validity.

3) Face-to-Face Training

In-person courses are also available, usually over 3-5 consecutive days, providing class-based teaching and group learning. While this can be immersive, face-to-face training is more expensive because of travel costs, room hire and accommodation.

Like Live online courses, face-to-face training is planned within a limited timeframe. Both formats often sacrifices depth of content and quality of learning for speed and convenience of the classroom. The limited time restricts how much can realistically be covered.

Consequently, with both live online and face-to-face training, the time constraint can result in an impersonal “tick-box” or "sheep dip" approach.  Trainees often say they feel frustrated because they either find the pace of learning too fast or too slow. This is because with comprehensive adult classes the tutor will often start at the pace of the slowest learner before time constraints kick in and then they are forced to rush ahead.  Trainees often feel their individual questions go unanswered or discussions are curtailed because the tutor, who is forced to hit a time target will need to "move on".

In addition, content is often sacrificed in order to get through the course in time. Trainees are often unaware what these shortcuts and gaps in knowledge are until they try working professionally and get stuck when launching their business.

As the saying goes, “You don’t know what you don’t know until you try to apply it.”

At this point, many celebrant trainees find themselves with unanswered questions, which suggests that their time-limited training was inadequate. Tutors may commit to helping students with questions after the course has ended, but only until the next cohort of trainees come along.

4) Academic Qualifications: E.g. NOCN Level 3 Certificate in Civil Celebrancy or City & Guilds Accredited Programme in Civil Celebrancy

For those seeking a formal qualification, some training providers market the NOCN Level 3 Certificate in Civil Celebrancy as an option. This is an academic qualification that isn’t required to become a celebrant but may appeal to those who enjoy structured, academic study. However, this path can take 1-2 years to complete due to the academic and administrative requirements.

After completing all the written assignments (at least 8 for the Certificate and 17 for the Diploma), there is often significant back and forth with tutors over each and every assignment to ensure that every “box is ticked”. Each essay must match exacting specifications. Once completed, the portfolio of work must then be internally and externally verified before the OFQUAL award can be certified.

For many, however, this qualification (or the City & Guilds Accredited Programme which has the same academic syllabus) turns out to be a cumbersome and unnecessary pursuit.

Since no qualification is required to practice as a celebrant in the UK, many trainees find this approach too rigid, tedious, and ultimately unhelpful, especially if they haven’t had recent academic experience.

As a result, many celebrants who start down this path end up withdrawing partway through, as it offers limited practical skills, much essay writing and a lot of paperwork with minimal real-world application.

There is also a lot of practical business and marketing strategies, tips and shortcuts that are simply not covered by any of these academic specifications. Consequently, many celebrants who only ever complete the qualification and don't get any additional practical business advice, support and guidance, struggle to get bookings. They sadly never end up working as a professional celebrant.

Choosing Comprehensive, Practical Training

When choosing the best celebrant training, it’s essential to focus on content that will prepare you fully for celebrancy work.

Many short, intensive courses (3-5 days) may miss important aspects simply because of the time constraint, and formal qualifications like the NOCN Level 3 Certificate or the City & Guilds replica add time and complexity without adding practical value.

Consider a course that provides:

1) Practical Skill Development

Choose training that goes beyond simply providing information and truly develops your practical skills. At Celebrant Training School, our online courses include detailed video modules and realistic, relevant written tasks that mirror the work of a professional celebrant. These tasks are assessed with constructive feedback focused on helping you succeed in the field—not on essay writing skills.

We also provide live, one-to-one assessments with developmental feedback to enhance your practical skills further.

Additionally, our courses offer comprehensive business and marketing training to ensure you’re fully prepared to thrive as a professional, self-employed celebrant.

2) Flexible, In-Depth Learning

Celebrant Training School’s online platform allows you to learn at your own pace, with no need to adhere to a rigid schedule. Bitesize videos let you study on the go, while written assessments can be submitted as you’re ready. This flexibility is particularly helpful for those balancing work or family commitments and allows you to revisit lessons anytime.

3) Ongoing Mentorship and Support

Unlike short-term courses that offer limited feedback, Celebrant Training School provides personalised one-on-one sessions designed to support you every step of the way. Many people who complete short-term, class-based courses—whether face-to-face or live online—often report feeling abandoned once the training provider moves on to the next cohort. Additionally, these programs often charge extra for ‘refresher training’ if you need additional support later.

In contrast, our self-paced online training provides lifetime access to instructional videos, so you can revisit and refresh your learning whenever you like. Our videos are regularly updated free of charge, keeping you informed on the latest trends and marketing strategies without additional costs.

At Celebrant Training School, we’re committed to your success beyond the training itself. Trainees receive ongoing support, advice, and guidance until they secure their first bookings. Wedding celebrant trainees are invited to shadow David at real weddings that he delivers across the UK.

Celebrant coaching is also available for those that want it to help you grow and develop your business further. Plus, our community of graduates and experienced celebrants is here to offer advice, encouragement, and support. With WhatsApp groups and online workshops, you can connect, network, and collaborate with other celebrants as you build your career

Which Path is Right for You?

If you’re wondering, “How do I become a celebrant in the UK?”, start by considering your goals and schedule. Self-paced online training offers flexibility and a strong foundation without unnecessary formalities. While academic qualifications like the Level 3 Certificate may appeal to those who enjoy formal study, remember that no formal qualification is required to practice celebrancy in the UK.
